Climbing Mount Kilimanjaro on the Machame route “Whiskey Route” means lots of company: sharing the mountain with a lot of other trekkers and is considered the most scenic route up Kilimanjaro.  The Machame route is the most popular route up Kilimanjaro summit Uhuru peak at Mt Kilimanjaro National Park Tanzania for trekkers who want to take their time, and enjoy sleeping outdoors and watching the sunrise and set over the Great Rift Valley. You’ll enjoy inspirational views of Kibo Peak, the eternal icefields, and Kili’s scree-covered dome.

Length: 100 kilometers / 62 miles round trip

Day 1: Arrival

Board shuttle bus from Nairobi at 0800 hrs and proceed to Arusha arriving at 1300hrs. Depart for Moshi at 1400hrs arriving at 1530hrs. Dinner and overnight at a hotel in Moshi or (Pick up from Kilimanjaro airport and transfer to hotel in Moshi)

Day 2: Machame Camp

Transfer from your hotel to the Kilimanjaro National Park gate at Machame. From here, you trek through the lush forest to Machame camp. Overnight stay at the camp.

  • Machame Gate (1490m) – Machame camp (2980m)
  • Distance: 18 km
  • Hiking time: 7 hours
  • Habitat: Montane Forest

Day 3: Shira Camp

Leave the forest. The path follows a steep ridge passing through open moorlands crossing a large gorge to reach Shira camp. Overnight stay at the camp.

  • Hiking time: 6 hours
  • Hiking Distance: About 9 km’s
  • Habitat: Moorlands

Day 4: Barranco Camp

You turn Eastwards and continue ascending through the dry landscape before dropping again to reach Barranco camp. Overnight stay at the camp.

  • Shira (3840m)-Lava Tower (4630m)-Barranco camp (3950m)
  • Hiking time: 7 hours
  • Distance: About 15 km’s
  • Habitat: Semi desert

Day 5: Barafu Camp

The path climbs steep out of the Barranco valley and crosses the Karanga valley, then turns North to reach Barafu camp. Overnight stay at the camp.

  • Barranco camp (3950m)- Barafu camp (4550m)
  • Hiking time: 7 hours
  • Distance: About 13 km’s
  • Habitat: Alpine desert

Day 6: Summit Attempt

Along day with an early start to reach the crater, ream at the Stella point in time for sunrise, then to Uhuru peak, the highest point in Africa. After wards, descend to Gilman’s point and down to Horombo camp. Overnight, stay at the camp.

  • Barafu camp (4550m)-Uhuru Peak (5895m)-Mweka (3100m)
  • Be there at the Top of Africa!!!
  • Distance: About 7 km’s ascent – 23 km’s descent
  • Hiking time: 8 hours to reach Uhuru Peak, 7/8 hours to descend to Mweka
  • Habitat: Stone scree and ice-capped summit

Day 7: Descent

Descend down passing Mandara camp to the gate where you are transferred back to your hotel in Moshi for dinner and overnight.

Day 8: Departure

After breakfast board shuttle bus from your hotel and proceed to Nairobi arriving late in the afternoon (6.30 PM).
